Blog Post #2 Genre History

Throughout history, the thriller genre has influenced many films to present fear and anxiety within the audience. The origin of thriller can be traced back for hundreds of years but evidently began to evolve in the 1800s and 1900s. The Classic era of this genre can be detected to Alfred Hitchcock, who is referred as the "Master of Suspense" in the cinematic world, since his films were a large part in gaining attention and attraction to thrillers.

When people think of some of the best thrillers, most will talk about the movie "Psycho" from 1960. This physiological thriller movie by Hitchcock imbedded the sense of fear into films within this genre. As time progressed, this genre evolved by adding crime and terror elements into the films in the 1970s and 1980s. This is shown in films such as "The Shining" (1980) and "Silence of the Lambs" (1991).

By the 21st century, thriller cinema was developed more modernly. This was shown in films by using modern day-like issues that people experience along with the element of anxiety and surprise. This allowed audiences to feel more emotionally affected by these thriller films.

The thriller genre overtime has thoroughly developed along with the audience developing as well. Even though some elements and concepts of thriller have changed in history, parts of it stayed the same. Thrillers are still consistently revolved around the idea of keeping their viewers of the edges of their seats.

This genre is connected to my final project due to the constant suspense and plot twists that will keep the audience on their toes. The characters faces will be kept hidden for a considerable amount of time in my project, creating anticipation and the feeling of fascination when their identities are finally revealed.
